Shelter & Orion - Orion Music Versions
(OMNISON12, PRPO1589 / November 2025)

27€ - 500 copies (SOLD OUT)

"Though a secular tradition, the release of a full LP of dub mixes is not such a common thing these days. With his HWYUIOD partner at the controls, Shelter, Tom Val offers 9 rumbling and murky numbers, radically remodeling material previously released as Orion Music Workshop. Undergoing a much more transformative treatment than that applied to Massive Attack's Protection by Mad Professor, Shelter's mixes take cues from Adrian Sherwood, Keith Leblanc & Mark Stewart, reteritorializing 1980's London punk ethos in small continental Europe basements and underground venues, and eventually further stripping away dub's caribeaness.

Orion Music Versions marks the end of a very important year for the label, the fourth in a series of brilliant releases (Krakatoa, Bruits de l'Ombre, The Window, and now this one) that gave to hear Tom's & his friends' joyously free interpretations of an exponentially growing range of influences (Actuel and Futura's free jazz, Can, Moebius and Cluster's Kraut and Bristol's turn-of-the-century post-rock, to label just the tip of the iceberg). A pure DIY affair that doesn't embarrass itself with trends, swiftly switching musical territories with each release, reconnecting underground (micro)worlds that have been drifting appart over the past 15 years, and thus recalling the vertiginous freedom of tone of defunct record shops / bric-à-brac that were Volcanic Tongue or Bimbo Tower." "Whatttttt.  Sleep deprived, dub-demolished trips from the Parisian underground via the duo who can do no wrong - Shelter & Orion. Now on a pretty unrelenting run of form, Shelter & Orion turn their gaze back on Orion’s previous ‘Music Workshop’ releases for a thoroughly dubwise reconfiguration.  The original source material is delay-splattered beyond the point of recognition, so much so that this actually just sounds like totally new material to us but the undeniable weirdo Les Disques Omnison charm is ever present.  The duo’s reverence for typically British dub/industrial aesthetics is blatantly obvious - smouldering basslines, crusty 4/4 struts and obliterated melodica lines pay their respects to Sherwoods studio wizardry, alongside Mark Stewart, Sheriff Lindo, Minister of Noise / Sir Freddie Viadukt and maybe that killer Dr Suess 10” on Holistic… the list goes on.  There’s nothing revolutionary on display here, but who cares, suffice to say this is music we’ll never tire of and when it’s executed this well, we can’t get enough." (All Night Flight)

"Tom Val and his Les Disques Omnison imprint keep the creative hot streak rolling with this collection of dub re-workings of various tracks from the Orion Music Workshop albums. It's perhaps their most accessible release to date, though on reflection, it's an entirely logical progression. Much of the LDO output is impressionistic - there are rarely 'songs' as such, in their place textures, tones, noise, discordance. Maybe, mostly, a feeling. Dub, as an aesthetic and ideological form, shares this same ethos, it just moves in another sonic direction. What also - and most importantly - uncuts the whole endeavour is the DIY, autodidactic sensibility at the heart of all of Val's work. Feeling - that word again - persists over form, intent superseding application. Which isn't to say these songs aren't well realised, but that something instinctive and intuitive guides them along, and in doing so presents unexpected nuances and flourishes that keep you guessing and returning. In that sense, there's an obvious affinity with the ON-U-Sound crew, and of course, the 'it was easy it was cheap go and do it' freedom of Ten Dubs That Shook The World. It's killer evolution for an artist and label clearly uninterested in standing still." (World Of Echo)

"Les Disques Omnison round out a killer year with one last genre exercise/subversion, in which Shelter & Orion revisit gems from the Orion Music Workshop catalogue in a heavy, On-U Sound post-punk dub style. For all the mystery and dark magic swirling around this project, it’s always sounded like these guys are having a blast, and never more so than here. The tips keep coming!" (Seasonal Work)

"Welcome to the next massive release by Les Disques Omnison. This time Shelter & Orion dig deeper than deep. Experimental music bows in adoration for the roots of dub and creates at the same time soundscapes standing on their own. It is absolutely stunning how the label‘s au goût still shimmers through when listening to these dream-like textures made of weird instruments, ethereal voices, sonic fragments, reverb and loads of low register."
